WEA's National Board Home Stretch Seminar

Welcome to the 2014 Home Stretch Seminar Information Page

What is Home Stretch?  Home Stretch is a 1-day event that takes place just before the National Board portfolio is due, and just when candidates are ready to shift focus from the portfolio to the Assessment Center.  At Home Stretch, candidates will participate in two sessions:

Assessment Center Preparation:  Candidates will be in like-certificate groups facilitated by an NBCT in their certificate area.  Candidates will participate in the same Assessment Center Preparation as they experienced in the Jump Start summer sessions.  Candidates will practice prompts, align standards and use the rubric to structure their responses and will be able to share questions and resources.  Participants will receive the WEA Assessment Center Handbook.

Portfolio Feedback:  Candidates select one completed entry to bring.  Up to four candidates and one NBCT Facilitator will read and provide standards-based feedback on your written commentary.  Candidates will read and provide standards-based feedback to other candidates’ entries using a protocol specially designed for use at WEA Home Stretch events.

Home Stretch Is…

Home Stretch Is Not…

  • IS an opportunity to receive feedback from peers based on evidence that is present or absent from your Written Commentary of one of your four entries.
  • IS an opportunity to critically analyze other candidate’s Written Commentary using a standards based rubric
  • IS the opportunity to learn about the Assessment Center procedure and practice the released items from your certificate area Assessment Center Exercises
  • IS the opportunity to network with candidates and an NBCT facilitator in your certificate area
  • IS sponsored and developed by Washington Education Association

  • IS NOT the place to be told what you must add or delete from your entry. This is your process. What you do with the feedback is up
    to YOU!
  • IS NOT the opportunity to have others read your work, then go home without providing feedback to others.
  • IS NOT an opportunity to learn “what questions are on the test." Facilitators and candidates will follow the ethical guidelines of NBPTS
  • IS NOT a replacement for cohort involvement.  It is a complement to the work you are doing with your group.
  • IS NOT an event you should miss!  See the support WEA has created for YOU.

Please monitor the WEA Professional Development Network website to get information about our annual WEA spring National Board Home Stretch seminars.

Entry Feedback Protocol

Candidates will be in Certificate area groups.  Each candidate may bring 5 copies of 1 entry for feedback using a protocol developed for WEA Home Stretch events.  To get the most out of the event, entries should be in the nearly polished stage.

  1. You will receive feedback from four NB candidates and one NBCT facilitator in your certificate area.
  2. Feedback protocol uses the standards for your entry in your certificate area.  You will prepare for Home Stretch by watching a Feedback Protocol Module that will be available to Home Stretch participants on line.
  3. Feedback protocol focuses on evidence in your written commentary.  Remember, you may choose to use or refuse feedback.  It is your entry, and your decision.

Assessment Center Preparation

Candidates will be in certificate area groups.  An NBCT facilitator in your certificate area will lead candidates through the Assessment Center Preparation.

This will be the same Assessment Center Preparation as we offered in Jump Start.  We do the same process for three reasons:

  1. It is important enough to hear again.
  2. It is more likely that candidates are ready to hear the information, and will understand the process better at this point of their candidacy.
  3. It is just a smart way to prepare.  We haven’t discovered a better way to do it.  In fact, support providers all over the nation are preparing candidates with this process.
